COLLEgE NEWs BUCHTEL COLLEGE news College Appointments James Divoky has been named as the acting associate dean of the CBA. Divoky is a professor of management and has been with The University of JAMES DIVOky Akron for the past 27 years. His research has appeared in Management Science, Computers and Operations Research, Total Quality Management, Decision Sciences Journal on Innovative Education and others. He has also served as assistant dean and director of graduate programs in business for the past ten years. Divoky was instrumental in bringing the first Fulbright students to the CBA and has helped to build that enrollment to the point where the CBA currently houses more Fulbright students than any other unit on campus. Other CBA appointments include Dr. Linda M. Orr as Interim Director of the Fisher Institute for Professional Selling, and Dr. Susan C. Hanlon as Acting Assistant Dean. Sasowsky Receives Distinguished Service Award The Hydrogeology Division awarded the 2009 Distinguished Service Award to Ira Sasowsky, professor of geology and environmental science and director of the Center for Environmental Studies, in recognition of his service to the organization. Sasowsky managed the division communications. Some of his duties included aiding in the transition of the division’s newsletter to its new electronic format and co-editing the Environmental and Engineering Geoscience. Sasowsky holds a B.S. in Geology from the University of Delaware and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. His research explores the interaction of water with the nearsurface environment. Sasowsky joined UA in 1995. investments, research, financial analysis, and economic literacy. His areas of specialization as the result of recent projects are marketing and distribution of retail investment products focused on emerging investor markets, and the development of financial literacy programming for high school students. Washington also has served as a senior administrator for a non-profit organization with program experience in micro-lending for small businesses and the development of a venture capital fund. He is currently the faculty advisor for FMA (Financial Management Association). CREATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL ARTS news School of Music Seeking All-Steinway Designation Only 102 music schools in the world have achieved the prestigious designation of being an All-Steinway School. The UA School of Music seeks to join that select group, and has launched an All-Steinway Campaign to get there. “The incomparable quality of handmade Steinway pianos signals excellence that attracts and inspires world-class students and professors,” says Dr. William K. Guegold, director of the UA School of Music. UA’s All-Steinway Campaign seeks to replace 62 of the 83 pianos in the School of Music, some of which are more than 80 years old. The campaign also seeks to establish an endowment to maintain the new pianos, protecting them for current and future generations of students. This year’s distinguished speaker was Walter W. Bettinger II, president and chief executive officer of The Charles Schwab Corporation.
