COLLEGE OF EDUCATION news Scholarship Honoring Akron Leader is Established Penny Zell and her husband William have established The Melvin Lichtman East Akron Board of Trade Scholarship for Educators in UA’s College of Education. The scholarship, which was originally created after Melvin’s death in 1989 and managed by the East Akron Board of Trade, will assist local students who aspire to be leaders in their classrooms and communities. Melvin Lichtman, a community leader, owner of Portage Furniture Company and former UA student, believed strongly in the City of Akron and its people. This endowed award will preserve his legacy by funding scholarship opportunities for students from Akron. Cultures that traditionally did not have a large impact in the business world are now getting involved,” Murphy says. “It is important to have an open mind about those who are different than ourselves and our concept of what is normal. Mahajan earned both his doctorate and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Tulane University in New Orleans. He is president of Clipius Technologies, a company that produces concepts for novel products for applications in defense, aerospace and particularly, biomedical areas. He has chaired the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Intelligent Systems Panel, now called the Model Identification and Intelligent Systems (MIIS) technical committee, and recently Mahajan received the ASME 2008 MIIS Honorary Award in Intelligent Systems for his contributions and service to the profession. Fuel for Athletes Focus of Nutrition Workshop Athletes and health professionals will gather Feb. 12 for “Fueling the Endurance Athlete,” a conference organized by the advisory board of UA’s Nutrition and Dietetic Programs. Open to the public, the daylong workshop will address training techniques, hydration and electrolytes, carbohydrates, vegetarian nutrition and other topics related to endurance athletes and performance. Among the speakers are Jackie Dikos, a registered dietitian and competitive runner who qualified for the 2008 Olympic Team Trials, and Dr. Tom Bartosokas, a sports medicine doctor for Summa Health Systems. Sports nutrition is one specialty of the UA Nutrition Center in Schrank Hall South. Dr Lonnie Lowery, a faculty member in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences, works with students to provide services ranging from metabolic rate measurements and computerized dietary analyses to training table consults.
