CAmPUs NEWs An Emmy for UA’s Student-Run TV The University of Akron’s student-run television station, Z-TV, picked up an Emmy award in ceremonies held in midSeptember by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in Cleveland. Z-TV’s “Akron After Hours” earned the Emmy win in the Lower Great Lakes chapter of NATAS’ competition for programs produced in 2008. This is the second win for Z-TV since 2006. Z-TV has been nominated for an Emmy a total of nine times since 2005. “I am really proud of my team, and excited to bring another Emmy home for Z-TV,” said Akron After Hours producer Antonia Villalon. “There’s something funny about Akron,” says Z-TV General Manager Dr. Phil Hoffman. “We seem to have an ability to laugh at ourselves in a way that other people can appreciate, and the students who create the show are serious about developing their craft of making people laugh.” “Akron After Hours” is a sketch comedy show produced by students in Z-TV, has won more than 10 national awards since 2006, and was previously nominated for a 2006 Emmy Award for Best Entertainment Program. Alumni from the show have gone on to work for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno; The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson; Tribeca Films and NBC Universal in Los Angeles. The University of Akron’s Z-TV programming is seen on Time Warner Cable of Northeast Ohio, as well as on over 4,000 campuses worldwide as part of The Open Student Television Network. The programs can also be seen on Time Warner Cable’s Ohio On Demand channel 501. Z-TV is partnered with WZIP-FM, the nation’s top-rated student-run radio station. Both programs are housed in The University of Akron’s School of Communication. The new season of “Akron After Hours” began Sept. 21. Campbell Jackson Honored for Community Involvement UA’s Candace Campbell Jackson is one of three civic leaders honored for community involvement in the latest issue of Kaleidoscope magazine. The UA vice president and chief of staff to President Luis Proenza serves as a CAMPBELL-JACkSON trustee at Summa Western Reserve Hospital, Glendale Cemetery and Children Services of Summit County. She also serves as a director at the Center for Nonprofit Excellence, and as a member of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association Trails Forever Legacy Committee and the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Committee. “We all have something to give right now — time, talent, a warm smile or hug, an unsolicited act of kindness — no matter our station in life.” “We all have something to give right now — time, talent, a warm smile or hug, an unsolicited act of kindness — no matter our station in life,” Campbell Jackson said in the magazine’s profile.
