Educator is Helping Future Teachers Richard Smith is an Akron native. He grew up in North Hill, and graduated from North High School in 1952. Richard received a Bachelor’s in Education from The University of Akron in 1956, and a Master’s in Education from Kent State University in 1963. He taught for many years in the Akron Public School system, beginning in 1956 at Thornton Junior High School. Richard also taught at Kenmore and Innes Junior High Schools. When he retired from teaching, he became a supervisor of student teachers at The University of Akron. Throughout his career, Richard was impressed by the hard work and dedication exhibited by student teachers, many of whom were struggling financially to remain in school and pursue their own dreams of teaching. It was this admiration that inspired him to establish The Richard L. Smith Student Teacher Scholarship. The scholarship is intended to relieve some of the financial concerns encountered by adult students, enabling them to devote their time and efforts towards a successful teaching experience. Richard has ensured the continuance of the scholarship by including a provision for it within his estate plans.
