The group visited students in grades K-2 and read Dr. Seuss books in celebration of the National Education Association’s 11th annual Read Across America Day. After reading to the K-2 classes, the students then presented a sportsmanship program to the 5th grade students. The sportsmanship program focused on the importance of academics, sportsmanship, and drug prevention in athletics. This program promoted National Sportsmanship Day, which was observed on March 3rd. The DREAM Team is a service club sponsored by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. The goal of the DREAM Team is for student athletes to promote positive leadership skills and healthy lifestyles to elementary and middle school students. The criteria for team selection begins with a commitment from the student athlete to remain drugfree. The DREAM Team’s training prepares them to form a new kind of team whose goal is to present a united approach to young students to be academically and athletically successful. There are currently 59 student athletes in the DREAM Team at J. H. Rose High School. Long Range Facility Plan The Pitt County School District wants to thank the more than 700 people who have attended the Listening Sessions during February. Approximately 115 speakers shared their Eastern Carolina Parent : April 2009 news from the local public schools It is clear from the Listening Sessions that the components of the plan that impact K-8 schools have raised serious concerns across the district. The school board appreciates the support of these schools from parents and community members. The positive support for the staff, leadership, and the programs in these K-8 schools has been evidenced in every listening session. In an effort to give full consideration to the “voices” in our community, the school board has decided to delay any recommendations in the plan associated with changing the K-8 configurations. The timeline on these projects has been extended in order to consider alternatives and to allow enough time to share these alternatives with members of our community.
