Parenting is full of laughs, rewards and love; however in today’s fast-paced world, parenting can also be overwhelming and extremely stressful. Stress is a part of parenting that is unavoidable. Despite the many ups and downs of parenting, modeling healthy ways of dealing with stress teaches children coping skills that will last them a life time. Not all stress is bad! Some stress can help you perform under pressure. However, operating in emergency mode all of the time can overwhelm the mind and body, strain relationships with children and other family members, and cause tiredness, sleeplessness and irritability. Staying calm during a traffic jam with a hungry, crying toddler in the back seat is not an easy feat, neither is managing stress after coming home from a busy day at work only to face a young child that refuses to fall asleep. Juggling work, bills, relationships, and household chores while trying to raise happy, healthy, well-mannered children can take its toll. Practice and conscious effort is required in managing the unique combination of stressors that come with parenting. Even when only one person in the family is feeling stressed, the rest of the family, including young children, feel it too. It is easy to view a child’s world as happy and carefree, but children also experience stress and too much of it isn’t good for them either. Common stressors for children range from hectic schedules, separation from parents, changes in routine to family conflict, divorce or a death in the family.
