Tweetsie Railroad, a family favorite, is tucked away along the Blue Ridge Mountains in Blowing Rock. This fun park offers its guests a trip back through time to the Old West. Part of Tweetsie’s ambience is its dedication and commitment to the Old West style, which includes dozens of rides that will treat you to visits from cowboy gunslingers or Native American chiefs. On property are a century-old general store, a blacksmith shop, a jail, a mining town, and petting zoo. But the biggest attraction is the three-mile train ride around the mountain where robbers and Native Americans make surprise visits! Though entertaining for all ages, Tweetsie Railroad will seem very real to your youngest travelers. Visit www.tweetsie. com for more information. Sliding Rock, located north of Brevard in the Pisgah National Forest, is a favorite travel spot for families desiring a little adventure and fun. This 150-foot natural water slide offers an exhilarating experience as you speed down this huge rock into 11,000 gallons of sixty-degree water ending in a pool. Though it may be hot outside, the sixty-degree temperature is sure to quickly cool you down. Strong swimming skills are recommended, though smaller children can be walked down the rock. Head north on Highway 221, one mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway, and take in the breathtaking view from Grandfather Mountain. Though you can drive through most of the park, you’ll need to stop and park at the visitors’ center to walk to the top. Kids will be greeted by the nature museum, which includes the “Big Bear” and Daniel Boone exhibit. But, the most popular attraction at Grandfather Mountain is most definitely the Mile-High Swinging Bridge that extends beautifully over a natural gorge.
