Eastern Carolina Parent - April 2009 - (Page 4) Fit Families Be A child’s Fitness Role Model these kids are in for a lifetime of potential medical problems ranging from type 2 diabetes to sleep apnea—not to mention the social stigma that often accompanies obesity. Children who are not presently overweight are also affected by today’s couch potato culture. Fitness is not only defined by weight or bodyfat percentage, but also by cardiovascular endurance, muscle tone, and flexibility. Many of today’s kids are sorely lacking in these areas. In other words, it may not show on the outside (due to genetics), but spending most days glued to the computer or watching TV comes with consequences not seen by the naked eye. These are just many reasons why, for it’s second year in a row, ViQuest is on a mission. TO FIND OUR FITNESS MOTHER OF THE YEAR role model. Last year, on May 12th, 2008 ViQuest awarded Jorine Olson, a nurse with Pitt County Memorial Hospital, our first annual Fitness Mother of the Year award. Jorine received three nominations, from unconnected family and friends, all citing great examples that exemplified her being a positive role model, one who has inspired her family, co-workers and others around her on how to become healthier and fit. Her passion for fitness and her portrayal of a healthy lifestyle continues to inspire all those around her, and most importantly, keep her kids and her family healthy and happy. In one of the nominations, this person wrote “Less than 3 years ago Jorine started running and was simply hooked. She joined a health club and encouraged her co-workers and family to join with her. Since she began her health journey, she has embraced her new attitude towards health and fitness and proven it to all those around her in many ways. One example in particular is her awesome feat of participating in several marathons, including the Disney Marathon in 2008 where she finished in roughly 5 1/2 hours. This has inspired me and my family to eat better and begin a regular exercise program.” Kids need inspiration to get up and move, especially those not comfortable playing competitive or team sports. They need role models. As parents, we can all do better. It’s up to you to be a fitness role model just like Jorine Olson.
