East Aurora and Beyond - 2007 Visitors Guide - (Page 28) 28 Knox F arm St te Park: a a year-round outdoor attraction The Knox family name is well-known throughout Western New York. For starters, they brought NHL hockey to Buffalo, owning the Buffalo Sabres from the team’s inception in 1970 until 2003. The family’s name is also attached to one of Western New York’s greatest cultural attractions, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. And now, they’ve given us perhaps their greatest gift of all … something that visitors and residents alike can enjoy yearround: Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora. In an era when green space is often overwhelmed and devoured by commercialism, East Aurora is one of only a handful of villages in the United States that can boast a state park within its boundaries. Even more encouraging is the fact that the park is being enhanced to host more community minded activities and events. The former country estate of the Knox family, the 633-acre park is “comprised of a variety of habitats, including 400 acres of grasslands (pastures and hayfields) and 100 acres of woodlands, ponds and several wetlands,” according to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Website (http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info. asp?parkID=89). The site goes on to say that “visitors to Knox Farm can observe wildlife, hike, cross-country ski and ride horseback along beautifully scenic nature trails. The park is home to several species of farm animals including horses, sheep, goats, llamas and chickens. Interpretive programs that highlight the park’s farm animals and its fiber arts program are being developed. Nature walks and programs are offered through the National Audubon Society. The Knox Farm Visitor Center contains exhibits of historical and natural interest.” Whether hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or riding horseback, there’s no right or wrong way to explore the natural wonder that is Knox Farm State Park. A multiple-use facility, Knox Farm State Park hosts a wide variety of activities — everything from polo events and carriage rides to soccer tournaments and concerts. It also features several ponds and a greenhouse. Interested in visiting Knox Farm State Park? To get there, take the I-90 to exit 54 (Route 400). Continue on Route 400 to the Jamison Road exit.
