Pratt and Lambert - Personal Expressions 2008 - (Page 21) feature Beyond ASID provides decorating guidance, connections and opportunities By Myra Orenstein Design B Between Martha Stewart and home improvement programs, it’s hard not to become obsessed with our living spaces. Magazines and television shows are full of ideas and suggestions, but they don’t always offer step-to-step guidelines on how to create the perfect personal living space. Face it — we need help. When we need help with our teeth, we go to a dentist. When we need help with our aches and pains, we see a doctor. When we need legal help, we call an attorney. So, why then, don’t we immediately go to an American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) decorator when we need interior design assistance? It’s certainly not because there’s a shortage of them available. There are, in fact, 40,000 members in 48 chapters across the United States and Canada. Twenty thousand of them are practicing interior designers; 6,500 practice primarily in the commercial field; 4,000 as residential designers, and the remainder do both. P R AT T & L A M B E R T 21
